Come October 1st, Toronto will be ‘aglow’ with innovative and inspiring night-long contemporary art in the form of exhibits, activities, performances, and more for the sixth annual Nuit Blanche festival. With each year, the unexpected and entertaining projects of Nuit Blanche draw more and more curious visitors – close to one million people attended last year’s event. The festival provides a rare opportunity to explore Toronto and see public space through a new perspective.

As soon as the sun sets, the Lumiere neighbourhood will be filled with plenty to see and do, all in Zone A of the festival. Here is a preview of some exciting projects just steps from Lumiere:

What: U of T – Space Suit Studio AirSHIP by Geoff Frost, Katie Kuzan, Susan Varickanickal, Canada Solar Blimp Design Team 

Description: “This exhibition imagines a world that could have been. A fleet of airships is seen moored for the night over a foreign land – waiting for the dawn before beginning their journeys again. The airships are tied together to prevent one from losing its way in the dark. Small lights on each ship illuminate the sky.”

What: Taddle Creek, 2010 – 2011 by Eleanor King

Description: “Streams and rivers once ran freely through Toronto, but with increasing development many have been re-routed underground. Made simply with light and audio, this work is created with multiple radios installed throughout a specific site, each tuned to a transmission of the sounds of running water.”

Where: 14 Ontario Power Generation Building, east side 700 University Avenue

What: L’écho-l’eau, 2011 by Richard Purdy

Description: “Navigating the perfect reflection (miroir d’eau) of the MaRS atrium in a limpid pool, suddenly you will crest the rapids of time, shooting back a hundred years to experience a traditional log run.”

Where: MaRS Building 101 College Street (East of University Avenue)

What: Coevality, 2011 by Chris Rogers, Graham Rogers, Dave Wood

Description: “Coevality is an interactive audio-video installation which focuses on co-existence and transformation. A trio of artists from two generations will capture the creative process of a traditional painting and transpose that into a contemporary digital projection using the wall of a historical Victorian building as their canvas.”

Where: 92 College Street (East of University Avenue)
